The Living House

Do you feel like your house is alive? I do! When I am having a lazy day at home I feel like the house is relaxing with me. It's as if we're hanging out together. I feel the same way when I am cooking, and the aromas of herbs and spices fill the house. The house is a witness to practically everything that happens in my life - it knows all my secrets and bad habits! I am so SO grateful to have a home and I intentionally put this notion into practice. I care for the house and garden by cleaning and making it beautiful. I greet the house when I arrive and say goodbye when I leave.

Pagans strive to work with the earth rather than conquer it, and your home is no exception. I have discovered that the mundane activities of cooking, cleaning and general upkeep go a whole lot smoother when operating on this principal. No home is perfect. Awkward bathrooms and weird spaces abound! But fighting against these features isn't always the best choice. Shaking your fist at that tiny closet proclaiming "I will MAKE this work!" is not going to change the fact that you have more clothes than space. What's more, your bedroom won't ever really feel organized with "everything in it's place". This is because you are working against your house, rather than with it.

Like many pagans, my home is my spiritual center. It is where I meditate, reflect, struggle, and celebrate. The state of the home often says more about how I am feeling than I think it does (my husband can attest to this!).
